Kissing the Snake: Unearthing Beauty #7

Cell phones. I judge them sometimes, and the person using it, even myself. I have seen those bumper stickers, "Hang up and Drive!" And I myself have driven behind someone on their cell phone, going way slow and swerving around on the road. And I have absolutely rolled my eyes and said, "She's on her cell phone." And so many times, when I am in a conversation with someone, one of us inevitably answers a call; while we are speaking to each other. There was a time when we couldn't be reached in every moment of our lives.

The other day, I was at a stoplight, I was bored with the moment and called someone. Just for the sake of filling up time. And maybe so I didn't feel so alone in that moment. But I am finding more and more, that boredom is fertile ground. If I leave enough space, and don't rush to fill it up, something beautiful grows from it. Why not just let cell phones be what they are for each of us? Who knows what that lady is doing on the phone in her car? Maybe she is hearing a report from the school nurse about her child. Maybe she is talking with her husband about what is for dinner. Who knows? Not me. So, why do I judge?

And blessings on us when we are brave enough to set our own boundaries, not just around cell phones, but what feels right to us in our lives! Let each of us be to our own rhythms. When I judge myself and others for cell phone behavior or anything else, it is an opportunity over and over, to own my discomfort and go from there. I am becoming well aware, that there is a whole lot I judge, even subtly in this life. And the more comfortable I get with discomfort, the less I judge my fellow neighbor when she's on the phone.
