Kissing the Snake: Unearthing Beauty #8

Yes, it's a toilet. Why would I post a toilet on an Unearthing Beauty Series? For two reasons. One, I am grateful that I can go to the bathroom. I am grateful, that I can pee and poo. I know, a little detailed. But, I am. My body is working exactly as it was made to do and I am grateful for that.

Reason number two, many of us complain when we have to go to the bathroom in a Port-O-Potty, or out in the woods on a cold night when camping. We have gotten used to this modern convenience, the toilet. In just one flush, the mess goes away. One of my favorite authors, Thomas Lynch, speaks about how we have sanitized our lives, our excrement and the mess of our bodies. He is a mortician and writes often about how we have made death pretty tidy. I agree. We have gotten used to tidy. I am not suggesting that we all just start emptying out our bodies wherever we please. Boundaries are good. The toilet just gets the mess out of sight a little too quickly. Many of us have no idea how to sit in the shit of our lives, let alone be grateful for it. And in the split second, after we push that little silver lever down and the water flows out, we forget that even the simple act of going to the bathroom is something we can be grateful for.

We agree 100%. Mick also says people are not grateful enough for their plumbers.

I see your beauty in this! I wouldn't have, now I am going to go through my house and appreciate all that we have rather than groan about how I wish it were different, bigger, cleaner, brighter...etc. You inspire me, J!
