Scotch Tape and the Little Light
When I was growing up, I used to Scotch tape plastic Christmas candles to our windows at home. You know, those off-white plastic candles crowned by a bright orange old-fashioned Christmas bulb. It even looks like wax is dripping down the neck of the candle. The bulbs used to get so hot, I could smell them, as they pressed against the purple metal Venetian blinds in my room.
We did not have window sills in our suburban home. So, I would spend a good deal of our family's decorating time taping the neck of these faux candles to the freezing cold window itself. And then, an hour or so later, I would hear a thunk. And I would go into the family room and see the orange shadow spread out across the beige carpeting. I would go and retrieve the Scotch tape, pick up the candle and tape that bugger to the window. Again and again. Throughout the entire season. Sometimes there would be three, four layers of tape on that window. I never gave up. I was a light keeper. I loved light that much. Still do.
