A Big Fat Yes

I had a long, luxurious breakfast with a friend today. Warm coffee with cream, yummy polenta, holding hands, folk music. What more could I ask for? Oh and, I forgot, intimate conversation and truth telling; or extreme living as my friend calls it. So, this means we were asking each other some of the tough questions; like what holds us back from fully stepping into life and that sort of thing. And, speaking of that,  I came across this today as I was preparing for a class I taught on feet tonight. It is from Divining the Body, by Jan Phillips.

The step into God is a bold, clean step into now- this day, with these people, under these circumstances. If we sink our feet into the present moment and feel anything but joy, we’re probably not on the path of the heart. It is time, then, to go inward, to ask our heart what it desires, and to move our feet in that direction.

So, I asked my friend, who is so big, so bold, so beautiful, what it is she would like to step into in her life. And she said that one of the things was to officiate at weddings (which by the way she would be wonderful and gifted at.) And I said, "Well hey, how about when someone asks me to officiate a wedding, and if I can't or don't want to it, what if I passed it on to you?" A look of slight terror crossed her face. And I said, "What?" And she said, "You don't even want to know what is going through my mind right now." And I said, "Oh, but yes, I do, what?" And she said, "To agree to that request, I feel that I need to have a website." Silence. And then full blown laughter; bending over and holding our bellies laughter.

We are so darn funny. No, sorry, I can't step into my calling, I need a website first. Or maybe the right haircut or scarf. Or the right degree. Or be in the right place. Or whatever all of the reasons we make up to hold back. What are we afraid of? Failure? Success? Many of us have learned that if we follow our hearts, we are not safe. We won't be able to support ourselves, is usually the top voice to rain on the parade. And when we show up with what is most dear to our hearts, which would not be a job but a vocation, we are WAY more vulnerable, than if we are just doing to do something. If we attach our hearts, we are in. Like Jan Phillips says, we are taking a bold clean step into the now.

So, what did my friend say after the brief website tangent? She said yes. SHE SAID YES. Isn't this what we are all called to? A big fat Yes.
