Go For It

Have you ever heard a great song on the radio and turned it up really loud? And sang at the top of your lungs and danced in your seat? I am guessing you have. But what I would love to know is this, when you pull up next to someone at a stoplight, do you keep dancing in your seat? And singing at the top of your lungs? I noticed lately that I will tone it way down when I stop next to someone. I definitely stop singing and my movement because almost unnoticeable.

Lately, I have been practicing in my car with being myself and staying present to the vulnerability I feel when I am jamming out and being witnessed by someone else. As silly and simple as this sounds, it is quite vulnerable. To fully express my joy in the moment can be awkward, almost embarrassing. I notice the person next to me awkwardly laugh or roll their eyes a little bit, as I throw my hands up in the air and sing I Gotta Feeling at the top of my lungs.

If you already are singing and dancing with all you've got at the stoplight, rock on. We need you. You embody the possibility of what it means to be ourselves in any situation and to own our joy because we get to. For those of you who know the awkwardness of what I am talking about, try it, keeping singing when you stop next to the car. Keep your window down even. It is just another opportunity to practice living joy. It's your birthright after all.
