God Grows from the Little Ones
I saw a little friend of mine today at church and I smile whenever I see her. She is like a little fairy, she shines. This morning she came to church with a friend and as far as I know, this might have been her very first trip inside of a church. It took her a few minutes to head up to the chancel where all of the children gather to hear the children's message. She was cautious, which was something I had never seen in her. She made it up to the steps and I watched her as she looked around, trying to find her footing. The minister shared a message on the parable of the mustard seed; how God grows from the little ones and the tiniest seed can produce the biggest bush. After the message, we close with the Lord's Prayer...our mother, our father, who are in heaven. As we began, I watched her. She looked around at first, not knowing the words and not sure what to do next. But then slowly, I saw her arms shift and move forward. She was opening her hands like a little cup in front of her. As we prayed with words, this child prayed naturally with her body. She held open her hands in the posture of receiving, eyes wide open. God grows from the little ones and teaches me that to pray is to receive. And to receive is where it all begins.
